4 Panel Narrative workshop Brief!

When me and my boyfriend were skating the other week he bet me if I landed the new trick I had been trying he would buy me a bottle of wine, and I did!

We decided as a group to focus on feminist movements which took place in non-western area's of the world which we may not know about or that wouldn't be present in our news. I started off focusing on a Russian feminist group known as Pussy Riot, however after more deeply researching them I thought they were too present in western news, so didn't feel they fit the brief of unseen enough.

The Feminist Five:

After doing some deeper research into other more unknown feminist movements across the world, I came across the Feminist Five, who are a group of five women from China who are challenging gender fairness issues, domestic violence and LQBTQ+ issues. They have done many movements across China and have brought a new wave of feminism to the country.

What caught my attention first about this feminist group was there "Blood Brides" stunt which was to raise awareness about China's domestic violence epidemic. They walked through tourist spots in Bejing in bloody wedding dresses to catch people's attention.

For my first small storyboard I tried to think of how to display their narrative. My first idea was to do my first spread focusing on the domestic violence, as that in itself is unseen, and then to have the Blood Bride protest on the second spread. However after a tutorial with Gary and Jon Mcnaught they suggested for me to focus on the feminist group and think of different compositions I could present them.

However, I did some more research and found out about two other movements the five started. The first one was called ,"Occupying Mens Toilets." This movement was to raise awareness on a daily gender fairness issue that women deal with daily. Women on average use the toilets three times more than men, however have only equal accessibility as them so therefore women spend a very long time stood in queues. Therefore the group occupied the mens toilets for 3 minute intervals at a time until the women's queues were shorter.

I discovered that in one of their more recent movements the five were arrested by the Chinese Government for "provoking behaviour". The five had planned an across cities protest on international women's day where they were going to hand out flyers and stickers on transport to raise awareness and bring a stop to sexual harassment on on public transport. Due to the feminist group being arrested it caused an outburst of other feminist in China acting out in solidarity by protesting through wearing masks of the group and handing out stickers until the group were released.

Most of my drawings for the Anthology were done on my iPad however I spent some time trying to draw the five in my sketchbook as I usually struggle with illustrating people.

My group had discussed keeping the colour palette minimal and similar to each others by using black, white, red and maybe a couple over colours if we need.

For the page where I am illustrating the five as Blood Brides I found out one of the locations they passed through was Qianmen street, so I decided I would illustrate them in front of it.
